Crocodile International is one of Asia's most recognised brands. Founded by
Dato Dr. Tan Hian-Tsin in 1947, the company's initial Focus was on providing
quality men's shirts at affordable prices.
By the 1950s it had expanded its product offer to include accessories such as
socks, underwear and leather products, and had entered Malaysia, Thailand,
Indonesia and Japan through a range of licensing deals. "Dato Tan was a
pioneer in apparel-brand licensing," CEO Ang Boon Tian tells WGSN. "He saw
the advantage of capitalising on the strength of licensees to propel the
brand."
Crocodile now counts 50 different licensees across Asia. In China, where it
is known as Cartelo Crocodile, the company works with both licensees and
distributors, who contribute more than a third of the global sales. In India it
operates a franchise business model through a joint venture.
Brand awareness is high across the region. The company has won a
Superbrands award in several Asian markets, and featured in Media Portfolio's
list of Asia's Top 1000 brands in 2005. Within China Cartelo Crocodile has
repeatedly been named the country's most sellable brand by the China
Industrial Information Issuing Center.
